AssetScan Beginnings
AssetScan was created to aid in the capture of information when managing large fleets of iPads.
Working in educational environments with 1:1 schemes, it was sometimes necessary to perform an audit of the devices (especially at the start of a new academic year when the leavers' iPads were processed for the new starters). Scannable asset stickers were often missing or defaced, or even blocked by a protective case. In addition, serial numbers were prone to being misread (how many times has a 'zero' been seen as an 'oh'? I've even been known to type and 'n' when hearing a '9').
I decided to solve this with an app. However, Apple does not allow the developer (that's me) access to the serial number from the device (so nefarious devs can't use it to track your usage across multiple apps). However, it does mean that an MDM server is a MUST for this to work (see the help pages for how).
The need for the first AssetScan (Lite) was born. As you can see it is minimalistic.
This Lite version is still available for FREE to educational and charity organisations. Just request access in the contact section.
AssetScan Evolved
Things have moved on a bit since then. The full version now has the capacity for adding almost any data as a scannable field, from the owner's name, to their UPN, username or department. Now with the addition of QR codes for longer data fields we can even accommodate information such as the user's address.
